Topps Confirms Strasburg Autograph Numbers for 2010 Topps Tribute Baseball

Topps has confirmed numbers for autographed relics of Stephen Strasburg in 2010 Topps Tribute Baseball. In total, there are 500 cards - 250 signed single relics and 250 signed dual relics (because two pieces of base are better than one). The relic pieces are pieces of a base used in Strasburg's debut with the Nationals.

The breakdown for each version is as follows:

According to Topps, cards will be available within the next three weeks. Collectors will be sent one of the five versions at random.

2010 Topps Tribute Baseball Stephen Strasburg Autographed Relic Redemption

A New Player in Baseball Cards - In the Game

Today, In the Game announced they're entering the baseball market. Like they've been doing with hockey for years, it looks like they'll be doing it without a major license.

They'll be kicking things off with 2010 In the Game Heroes and Prospects Hits that will offer a mix of up-and-comers and old-timers. Why the emphasis on "hits" you ask? Because there's no base cards, just hits (the press release's language, not mine). Four hits per four-card box, to be exact.

Another statement from the press release that made me chuckle:

On average, there will be 3.5 Prospect Autographs per box and every other box will contain one Heroes Cut Signature or Heroes Game-Used Memorabilia card featuring some of the greatest players to step out onto the diamond.

If I read that literally, you're going to get half a signature so people can make up their own imaginary prospects using a first name on one card and a last name on another. Of course, the statement is meant to offer an explanation of how things will be seeded.

There's little other info available at this time other than names like Jason Heyward and Tim Beckham being the headline prospects and cut signatures of Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams and Hank Aaron covering the heroes portion. The mock-ups of the cut signatures show pictures of the players, which could signal a shift in exclusive contracts. A few months ago I recall Upper Deck had an exclusive with the Dimaggio estate. But that was before the lawsuits started flying. So whatever the case, at least one Joltin' Joe autograph will lurk in boxes.

In the Game has been working around licenses for many years and they know how to make a card that looks great without infringing on rights. So while these cards might be missing a logo here and there, I'm still very interested to see where the company goes with baseball.

2010 In the Game Heroes and Prospects Hits is scheduled for release on November 1.

Sportskings and Ringside Boxing National Plans

Sportskings has announced redemption plans and contests for the upcoming National show in Baltimore August 4 to 8.

A box topper redemption will give collectors an exclusive card made specifically for the show. Below are two examples featuring UFC champion Georges St-Pierre and former home run king Mark McGwire.

National VIPs will also find five cards from an exclusive Sportskings set. But building the set is going to be tricky as there's 25 cards in the set, two of which will be short printed. Here's the checklist:

Opening a box of Ringside Boxing KO Edition at the booth will provide two entries, while a box of TKO Edition is good for one entry. Entries are good for each day's draws.

Famous Fabrics Second Edition Offers First Card Featuring LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh (Sort Of)

Less than 24 hours after LeBron James made the emotionless announcement that he was signing with the Miami Heat to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, Creative Cardboard Concepts has announced they'll have a triple jersey card of the trio in Famous Fabrics Second Edition.

 Because Famous Fabrics is not a licensed set, it does not feature player photos.

Topps Steven Strasburg #661 to Be Included in Packs of 2010 Topps Update

Beckett just posted an early preview of 2010 Topps Update Baseball. They mention that the 661 card on the checklist will indeed be Steven Strasburg. The card will feature a different photo of the one on the Million Card Giveaway, however I think it should go a ways in satisfying the many ticked off folks who thought the promotion was about old cards, not gimmicked ones that take a spot in our regular sets.

Also of note are player drawn sketch cards done by Major Leaguers, kind of like Topps did with 2009 Topps WWE. However, judging by the sample Topps provided, I think I'd rather have them stick to the game on the field.

Topps Statement Regarding Allen and Ginter Strasburg Minis

Topps has confirmed that the 2010 Allen and Ginter Steven Strasburg mini card is not short printed. However, they also said there is only the one basic version of the card, so no black borders or A&G backs. There's also no regular-sized version of the card either.

The real insanity will begin when folks start uncovering autograph redemptions. There's currently one on eBay and the price is approaching that magical $1000 mark.

To further clear things up (or to fuel the Strasburg fire), the pitcher's minis and autographs are available in both hobby and retail packs.

Trader TV: Toy Story Fun Packs Two-Pack Blister Break

This was supposed to go live last night but for whatever reason, it didn't upload right. Below you'll find a two-pack break of Topps' new Toy Story Fun Packs. They combine elements from all three films, offering cards, stickers and other goodies like magnets and motion cards. Because they're aimed at kids, I recruited a couple of very excited helpers.

As you can tell, Evelyn and Ethan were very excited about these cards. Within ten seconds of finishing filming, the magnet was on the fridge and the pop-up Buzz was put together. Ethan had to be stopped from putting a sticker on his hand (these stickers belong in a book).

When you hear the chatter about bringing kids back into the hobby, this is the way to do it. The emphasis is on playing with the cards and interacting with them rather than hoping for a valuable hit. I got into the hobby by ripping packs and sorting through them. "Collecting" came later. But without the initial fun I would have never continued.

Has Razor Topped the Castro Autograph?

Somewhere out there is a Fidel Castro cut signature card from Topps that was defaced and has gone on to become something of a piece of hobby art. Apparently the guy who got it didn't bleed Commie red and proceeded to doodle all over the card. If Castro's controversial, I wonder what some will think of a dual autograph Razor has coming in their upcoming 2010 Cut Signature Edition.

It's a Gulf War grand-daddy: George Bush (Sr) and Saddam Hussein. This wasn't the only card that stuck out on the sell sheet. I'm immediately drawn to the name of my all-time hero, Jim Henson, whom I was surprised to see as a marquee name. Perhaps Razor owner Brian Gray is a huge Muppets fan like myself.

The sell sheet curiously lists the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi and Mark Twain in the same breath as Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt.

Like previous Razor Cut Signature releases and the recent Upper Deck Prominent Cuts, it's a mixed bag with some added intrigue.

Random Pack Breaks: 2010 Topps National Chicle Baseball

When Topps first announced 2010 Topps National Chicle Baseball, the discussion that ensued was intense. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact it was a rare new brand to baseball. Or maybe it was the questionable images that were released without any background info. But whatever the case, controversy followed the set more than Dallas Braden complaining about some sort of phantom baseball code.

A few months have passed, the set's out and all seems pretty quiet. I have to say, I'm still intrigued. I managed to track down a sample pack on my trip to the city on Friday to get a small taste of what the release offers.

102. Adam Wainwright

 This is probably my favorite card from the pack. I like the water tones a lot. It gives the card a distinct feel. Artist: Jeff Zachowski

157. Jimmy Rollins

 Meh. I can't say it's totally memorable. But not horrible either. It appears to be slightly impressionist inspired mixed with realism. Rollins' blank face is somewhat symbolic of my indifference to this card. Artist: Mike Kupka

192. J.D. Drew

 I'm familiar with Chris Henderson's work and like it a lot. In fact, a few years ago I ordered four custom sketch cards from him, which I plan on displaying really soon when I pay tribute to the subjects. Henderson shows he's excellent at getting a stylized realistic look.

15. Brad Hawpe

 Brad Hawpe says, "Brad Hawpe is tired. Brad Hawpe go to bench after this swing and take a nap. Wake Brad Hawpe up when it's time to go in the field." Artist: Ken Branch

306. Chipper Jones

 Honestly, when I first saw this card I was thinking someone busted into my pack and drew the glasses on Chipper like I used to on photos of people I wasn't too fond of in my yearbooks. Nope. It's part of the card. Between Chipper Ruth and this, National Chicle appears to be bullying Mr. Jones.

89. Chone Figgins

 Another card from Monty Sheldon, this one is something of a comeback compared to the above Chipper. It's cleanly painted, although the pose is a little bland.

109. Nelson Cruz

In case you've ever wondered what a reverse bobblehead looks like, here you go. Cruz reminds me of the shrunken head guy in Beetlejuice. Artist: Paul Lempa

Overall, I'd say I really like about half of the art shown in this pack. And even the stuff I don't like so much, it still makes for an interesting set. I also like that the artists are given significant prominence in the set with short bios on every card. But that said, I'd probably have preferred simply their name and website URL so I could check them out myself rather than reading the same bio over and over again.

For better or worse, I suspect there won't be the same amount of discussion from any of the reamining baseball sets this year. Topps is playing it pretty safe in 2010. I don't necessarily see that entirely as a negative as they're not rocking the boat with anything drastic other than the whole exclusive license thing.

I like that National Chicle presents something new, even if a good chunk of it isn't the greatest. It's a fresh concept that I think with a few manageable tweaks could really take off. That is if it's popular enough to warrant being given a chance for a follow-up in 2011.

Garth Ennis' The Pro Brings Another Instant Sell-Out Sketch Card Set

Yesterday 5finity put their latest all sketch card set for The Pro out for pre-sale. Not long after all 800 packs were sold out.

The Pro Sketch Card Series - Cal Slayton

Set for a June 15 release, the set is based on the comic created by Garth Ennis, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner. The story pokes fun at superhero lore and follows the exploits of a super-powered hooker. So maybe for once the extra-large chest is for genuine giggles in the form of parody. I can't say that I've yet to read the one-shot comic, but the bit of research I did above certainly has me curious.

Each of the serial numbered packs contain at least one sketch card. However, like all 5finity sets from the past year, there'll be a handful of chase elements as well:

• 50 Rare Artist Sketch Cards (1:16 packs)
• 50 Hot Packs with 2-3 Sketch Cards (1:16 packs)
• 20 Amanda Conner Sketch Cards (1:40 packs)
• 10 Jimmy Palmiotti Sketch Cards (1:80 packs)

Overall odds for a chase pack are 1:6 packs. There's also 32 incentive sketch cards for dealers ordering 25 packs or more.
