Sportskings and Ringside Boxing National Plans

Sportskings has announced redemption plans and contests for the upcoming National show in Baltimore August 4 to 8.

A box topper redemption will give collectors an exclusive card made specifically for the show. Below are two examples featuring UFC champion Georges St-Pierre and former home run king Mark McGwire.

National VIPs will also find five cards from an exclusive Sportskings set. But building the set is going to be tricky as there's 25 cards in the set, two of which will be short printed. Here's the checklist:

1 Royce Gracie
2 Duke Snider
3 Misty May-Treanor
4 Kerri Walsh
5 Scotty Nguyen
6 Wilt Chamberlain
7 Renaldo Nehemiah
8 Dennis Rodman
9 Warren Sapp
10 Bret Hart
11 Joe Sakic
12 Muhammad Ali (SP)
13 Althea Gibson
14 Bernie Parent
15 Georges St-Pierre
16 Mark McGwire
17 Eusebio
18 Joe Greene
19 Ronnie Coleman
20 Scott Hamilton
21 Curly Neal
22 Bob Lilly
23 Bruce Lee (SP)
24 Bruno Sammartino
25 Laffit Pincay Jr.

Five cards from the set will be inserted in each VIP gift bag.

Finally, during each day of the show, the Sportkings booth will be doing draws for memorabilia featuring autographed trunks from the likes of Vinny Paz, Ray Mancini, Lennox Lewis, Hurricane Carter and more. Opening a box of Ringside Boxing KO Edition at the booth will provide two entries, while a box of TKO Edition is good for one entry. Entries are good for each day's draws.

For those going to the National, you can find them at booth #2233.

Random Pack Break: Topps 2010 UFC Main Event (Rack Pack)

I finally found something at my local (Canadian) Wal-mart that wasn't hockey, Bella Sara or Pokemon and I caved to the idea of opening something I have very limited knowledge in, the world of mixed martial arts. Specifically: 2010 Topps UFC Main Event.

Let's see if the cards do their job and train me a little bit about the "it" sport of last year that's being juiced by Topps for all it's worth before the clock strikes midnight. The packs are rack packs featuring a massive 11 cards spread over two compartments. The first half:

15. Rich Franklin

131. Mike Pierce vs. Brock Larson "UFC Debut"

42. Randy Couture (I've heard of this guy.)

Top 10 Fights of 2009 TT09-29. Nate Quarry vs. Tim Credeur
(So the insert set is about the Top 10 fights of last year yet this is card #29?)

105. Eliot Marshall

29. Nate Diaz

Second part:
8. Dan Miller

84. Chael Sonnen

147. Donald Cerrone "WEC Fighter"

134. Brian Foster vs. Rick Story "UFC Debut"

10. Anderson Silva

 Checklist 4

These cards have a lot of shine to them. However, I think that the foil board is used correctly to jazz up this set and give it a high-end feel. I do have one major issue with the design, though. The names are almost unreadable. Like many of my students who think it looks cool to convert their stories into so fancy font, the designers went overboard here. Not knowing who a lot of these fighters are, I'm not sure if I even typed their name correctly due to the fact that Old Antique or whatever this supposedly old fashioned typeset is tough make out the difference between the 'T' and 'C', amongst others. The backs don't make it much easier:

Overall, I kind of like this set. It's flashy yet straightforward. I got nothing too exciting and the Top 10 Fights insert set makes no sense to me whatsoever. But when you live far from a card shop and Wal-mart is the main spontaneous pack-purchasing alternative, I've certainly experienced worse.

Topps Online Store Offers Five Exclusive UFC Cards

Topps struck gold with the launch of their UFC line. And they don't seem to be letting up. In about a year they've released three full-blown sets, some eTopps cards and a couple of other odds and ends. The latest cards are five that are only available through Topps' online store. They come free with the purchase of a store-exclusive TapouT T-shirt.

The picture of the cards are pretty small, but the names I can make out are Kimbo Slice, Thiago Alves, Keith Jardine, Kenny Florian and some other guy that someone might want to help out identifying.

Topps Online Store Exclusive UFC TapouT cards
The shirt costs $28 plus shipping. I know I wouldn't wear it, but I'm also not the type who displays MMA brands on any of my clothing. It must come with age or the fact that I'm not cool. However I did have one of those color-change shirts back in the early 90s. I think I was cool for a couple of hours. Then the shirt was uncool so I put it in the dryer and killed the color change effect leaving me with one ugly, gimmick-less shirt.

In all honesty, I don't understand the whole MMA culture that goes with these shirts. To me they all look very similar with the same logos. But I guess so are Levi's jeans. At any rate, if you want the shirt but not the cards that come with it, I'm certainly here.

My Favourite Cards of 2010 So Far

Topps' Star Wars Galaxy 5 released this week. Others might be chasing the sketch cards and actor autographs, I'll be happy once I pick up a base set, slide them into some pages and admire the varied artistic styles within. Although I don't have a set yet, from the images I've seen online, these are my favourite cards of the year thus far:

Empire propaganda! The trio of base cards are courtesy of Cliff Chiang. Not only are the cards themselves gorgeous, but they capture the look and feel of WWII propaganda posters. And they're funny as hell.

The hobby seems to be taking a liking to "propaganda" as of late. First there was the Propaganda inserts in 2009 Topps Updates and Highlights Baseball. A similar-looking set of inserts was also included in the just-released UFC Main Event. Those cards are nice too, but the style is pretty much the same and gets repetitive. Chiang's Star Wars takes are true originals each time.

Star Wars Galaxy 5 base sets can be found for under $10 plus shipping. Boxes seem to be running at about $70 a pop right now, but will likely rise another $10-15 once stock starts drying up. If you're an art fan even in the slightest, the base set is one of the biggest bargains the hobby has to offer.

More American Heritage and UFC Coming from Topps in June

According to Previews Magazine, Topps has follow-up sets scheduled for June for both their American Heritage and UFC brands.

American Heritage: Heroes Edition appears to be following a similar path to the original set: old school Topps designs for old school folks that helped shape American history. The basic breakdown is two autographs or relics per box, six inserts and eight parallels. There will be eight cards per pack and 24 packs in a box. No details were given as to the subjects, signers or memorabilia that will be used, although my guess is that those who liked American Heritage are going to think the same about this set.

Topps UFC 2009 also seems to be much the same. Small boxes (16 packs), emphasis on autographs and memorabilia. Maybe this time Brock's autograph will show up.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for more info as it is released.

UFC: Round 1 Autograph Gallery

MMA finally has its own mainstream release with Topps' UFC: Round 1. Although the originally advertised Brock Lesnar never materialized, there's still plenty of top fighters included in the set such as Georges St-Pierre, Randy Couture and last night's main event winner Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Below is a selection of the set. Click here to see the complete gallery.

Topps Enters the Octogon with UFC

Topps just announced they've reached an agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship on exclusive rights to UFC-brand cards. The deal, which runs through May, 2011, includes all of UFC's history. The press release also mentions memorabilia cards including match gloves and Octogon swatches. Expect the first Topps UFC set in early 2009.

All I can say is, it's about time. I've been wondering when a UFC set would be produced for a couple of years now. My guess is that this won't affect Upper Deck's upcoming MMA set as it features past and present fighters and doesn't focus on the UFC brand.
