Sets I Want to See: The Expendables

Sylvester Stallone
Bruce Willis
Jet Li
Dolph Lundgren
Jason Statham
Arnold Freakin' Schwarzenegger
Mickey Rourke

As far as legitimate action heroes from the past 25 years go, these guys are the who's who of cheesy guy flicks where things blow up real good. There's also Stone Cold Steve Austin, Randy Couture and Eric Roberts. All that's missing is Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme. Well, the list above are attempting to make the cheesy action flick cool again with The Expendables. The trailer debuted online today and quite honestly, I was expecting more. Note to Sylvester Stallone: we want to see you kick people, not listen to you babble constantly.

That being said, I so want a card set just for the autograph possibilities. From that list, only a couple already have autographs. Schwarzenegger appeared in Batman and Robin Widescreen from SkyBox, Terminator 3 from Comic Images and on a pseudo-cut Conan the Barbarian card that used cut-up Batman and Robin cards. Fleer  convinced Stone Cold to sign in their Wrestlemania set back in 2001. Randy Couture's currently in Upper Deck Prominent Cuts and has also signed for Donruss Americana and Topps Allen and Ginter. Finally, there's Julia Roberts' brother Eric, who was in Upper Deck Spectrum and Donruss Americana.

Tonight I had a little fun and came up with some mock-ups for a possible set. Enjoy! The Expendables is in theatres this August and I'm guessing it'll be on DVD and Blu-ray a couple weeks later.

Darryl Strawberry Returns to New York...

...as a member of the latest season of Celebrity Apprentice.

By appearing on the show, Strawberry will cement his status as a C-list celebrity forever. The Apprentice is one of the reality shows I enjoy but primarily because of the tasks they complete as opposed to all of the Donald Trump ego-stroking and soundbites.

Strawberry isn't the only contestant with a cardboard connection. His castmates with trading cards include:
  • former WCW Champion Goldberg (several wrestling sets, Inkworks' Looney Tunes Back in Action)
  • WWE Diva Maria (tons of wrestling sets)
  • Cyndi Lauper (had her own set from Topps back in the 1985)
  • Sharon Osbourne (part of Inkworks' The Osbournes set, including an autograph)
  • Holly Robinson Peete (Topps' 21 Jump Street)
  • Poison frontman Brett Michaels (Brockum's RockCards [1991])
  • Swimmer Summer Sanders (several Olympic and multi-sports sets and subsets)
  • Olympian Michael Johnson (several Olympic and multi-sports sets and subsets)

I wouldn't expect a set commemorating the latest installment of The Apprentice. Comic Images made a set back in 2005. Despite the inclusion of Donald Trump autographs, to say the release was a flop would be an understatement.

Darryl Strawberry isn't a complete stranger to primetime television. He appeared in the classic Simpsons episode "Homer at the Bat," which aired way back in the show's third season.

The Celebrity Apprentice premieres March 14.

Bob Barker's Comeback?

To continue on with their string of "celebrity" guest hosts, TV legend Bob Barker is hosting WWE Raw tonight. I sense a lot of really bad comedic sketches coming but I do hope that Barker's classic cameo from Happy Gilmore makes the cut as he knocks someone on their butt.

Now 85, Barker was the host of The Price is Right for 35 years before stepping down in 2007. The classic game show has continued on with Drew Carey taking up the duties of helping old ladies spin the big wheel and fending off their advances. But the couple of times that I've seen Carey just makes me long for Barker so I've stopped watching on my days off altogether.

Barker joins the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, Seth Green and Jeremy Piven as previous Raw guest hosts in WWE's attempts to gain more mainstream attention. So far the results have been mixed. Shaq was pretty awesome and Green wasn't too bad either. Piven, though, well he'll forever be linked with the term "Summerfest" amongst pro wrestling circles.

Here's a Price is Right custom I whipped up. I was going for a glittery 70s-looking border. It's all right but not exactly what I had in mind. As soon as I finished it I was reminded of 1991 Donruss Elite inserts.

Note to Topps: Consider looking into the logistics of getting a Raw guest host autograph lineup for an upcoming WWE set and get Bob Barker in there.

Update:

I kept playing with the design after dinner and came up with a couple of "parallels":

Heavenly Metal

Last week I received a package from Mario at Wax Heaven that had some good ole' wrasslin cards and this thing of beauty:

Bon Jovi in trading card form. It comes from Impel's 1991 Mega Metal set, which after doing a little research has a Skid Row hologram. There's boxes on eBay for under $20 so I think I may have to dip in and get my 80s hair metal nostalgia going one of these days.
The big finds of the box were a trio of hits from TriStar's recent TNA: Cross the Line set.

The dual event-used card and the Dutt autograph are both numbered /50. I haven't seen a lot of TNA wrestling yet but I do know that all three of these guys featured do have some good moves. Whether or not they become stars on a bigger stage remains to be seen.
Here's some more TNA:

We've got old man Foley who just won TNA's big belt last weekend over Sting (no, this isn't 1997). Then we have a funky art card of an all-time favorite of mine, Christian who recently returned to his WWE roots and even more recently (yesterday) won the ECW Championship.

Oh, yeah, there was also this:

That, my friends, is Don West captured in a rare moment where he was at a loss for words.

Mario didn't neglect the wrestling big leagues either. He also sent me some WWE cards I hadn't seen in person yet: a handful of Topps' UK-exclusive Slam Attacks. They're a CCG that are meant to be played with. Topps recently brought the line over to North America with a baseball set that I haven't seen or played. Here's a sample:

You can never go wrong with Jimmy Snuka and the Ken Kennedy is a foil - not sure if it's a parallel or just something fancy. These have a nice clean look to them.
Thanks a bunch, Mario!

Hot Rod

A while back I sent a handful of WWE Heritage IV commons down to southern California Oregon to help Rod from Padrographs. I was happy to help him on his way to his set. A couple weeks back (yes, I'm waaaaay behind in my book keeping) I received a most shocking and amazing package in return.

Here's some highlights:

PONCH!

Other American Celebrity inserts from the awesome Topps American Heritage set:
Jesse Ventura
Michael Phelps
Charlie Sheen in embossed cartoon form!

Plus an ENTIRE set of Three Musketeers cards from SkyBox. While I'm on the topic of sets, there was also:
A complete set of Weird Wheels (circa 1980 from Topps), which is instantly one of my all-time favorite sets.

I know, I know, I am already spoiled. But that's not it. We've also got a 12-card set from Dark Horse featuring legendary comic writer John Byrne's Next Men.

Then we move onto an assortment of Heroes singles, which included perhaps the most unattractive shots of an attractive lady:

Speaking of pretty ladies, here's some Diva ink, Layla style:

Not only that, but there was also an event-used mat card featuring PAUL BURCHILL and some tattooed guy named Batista.

But wait, that's still not all. Take this all you Allen & Ginter lovers:

That's more than half of the Allen & Ginter Superstars minis from WWE Heritage IV, which are actually pretty tough to come by as they're only in retail packs.

This package just goes to show again that there's some great, great folks out there with tremendous generosity. Thanks VERY MUCH, Rod!
