Preview: 2010-11 O-Pee-Chee Hockey (It's Looking WAY Better Than Last Year)

In the interest of full disclosure: I probably give the O-Pee-Chee name a little more of a pass than it sometimes deserves. Call it my personal form of Canadian patriotism mixed with equal parts nostalgia. That said, after a handful of jumbo packs, I was extremely apathetic towards Upper Deck's 2009-10 O-Pee-Chee Hockey release. The design was pukish, which for a release geared towards set building, was a kiss of death.

But from the early images for 2010-11 O-Pee-Chee Hockey, it looks like Upper Deck has things back on track. The base card design has a fair amount of white space and is probably the most modern since Upper Deck took over the brand. The picture window on the front may end up being too small for some action photos, but the Jarome Iginla shown on the initial promo materials looks very solid - it feels kind of like 2002 Topps Total or 2003 Topps Bazooka Baseball to me. The Marquee Rookies return once again. Although there's no mention of them being short printed, I'd assume they will be as in years past. In all, the base set will have a whopping 600 cards.

As far as inserts go, there's no guarantees with a guaranteed hit in every box. Overall odds have O-Pee-Chee Signatures and O-Pee-Chee Souvenirs each falling at a rate of three per case, or one autograph or memorabilia card in every other box. O-Pee-Chee Souvenirs are quad jersey cards featuring four different players. I like these odds as it emphasizes the set building as the focus of the set, rather than tossing in a bunch of hits for the sake of having them and only driving up the cost.

2010-11 O-Pee-Chee isn't rocking the boat with a lot of changes. Each pack will contain a Retro parallel. One in every four packs will have a Retro Rainbow parallel, while there will be a Black-Bordered Rainbow Retro parallel or two in every hobby box. Boxes also promise one In Action insert and nine additional inserts, although details on these are not yet available.

Packs of 2010-11 O-Pee-Chee Hockey will have six cards with 36 packs in a box. It is scheduled to be released in December, a little before Christmas.

2010 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations and Short Prints

Yeah, I know I'm a little behind. You've likely already heard, but to keep up with consistency's sake of running short print and variation info (I find I need it five years later quite often), here's the lowdown for 2010 Topps Heritage Baseball.

Short Prints:
Cards 426 - 500 are all short printed. They're inserted 1:3 packs.

Variations:

Dice Game
Based on a rare test issue from 1961 that added an interactive game element, the Dice Game variations in 2010 Topps Heritage are 1:72 packs. The checklist consists of 18 cards.

  • Joe Mauer
  • Victor Martinez
  • Albert Pujols
  • Mark Teixeira
  • Grady Sizemore
  • Justin Upton
  • Adam Jones
  • Vladimir Guerrero
  • Matt Kemp
  • Ichiro
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka
  • Tim Lincecum
  • Chase Utley
  • Ian Kinsler
  • Derek Jeter
  • Hanley Ramirez
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Chipper Jones
Color Variations
These appear to represent the "cute gimmick cards" of the series. Topps didn't say how rare the color variations are other than they're "extremely short printed."

  • Albert Pujols - Black-Black
  • Joe Mauer - Black-Black
  • CC Sabathia - Green-Yellow
  • Derek Jeter - Red-Yellow
  • Grady Sizemore - Green-Red
  • J.A. Happ - Orange-Blue
  • Zack Greinke - Yellow-Blue
  • Ryan Braun - Blue-Orange
  • David Wright - Green-Yellow
  • Pablo Sandoval - Yellow-Green
If there's going to be extreme short prints, this I don't mind so much. They don't scream as being a publicity stunt (Rudy G raising his fist to the heavens in a Red Sox celebratory scrum), nor do they insult the intelligence and allegiances of baseball fans ("Thom" Glavine, slapping rival logos on superstars). These are subtle variations that don't wreck havoc on a set.

Exclusives
Topps honors the 1961 home run chase by producing three 15-card subsets of exclusives that come together to make one 45-card insert set. Each will have a different player in the set:

Babe Ruth (hobby packs)
Roger Maris (Wal-mart exclusive)
Mickey Mantle (Target exclusive)

Among these are three short prints: Ruth (#60), Maris (#61) and Mantle (#56). Each will also have a relic parallel serial numbered to the player's jersey number (Ruth /3, Maris /9 and Mantle /7).

Autograph Note
Finally, Topps also announced that all of Juan Marichal's Real One Autographs were signed in red. None are sequentially numbered like the rest of the red ink variations in the set.

Upper Deck Confirms Retail Exclusive SPs in 2010 Upper Deck Baseball

Today Upper Deck confirmed that they've included a handful of short prints as retail exclusives for 2010 Upper Deck Baseball. Wal-Mart packs have a Sarah Palin and a Pete Rose card while Target packs have a "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and a Yankees tribute highlighting the handful of World Series victories shared by teammates Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte.

Upper Deck's press release didn't offer specific odds, but did promise they were "super-rare." I'll hold back a snide remark but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking something.
Seriously, though, what's with this obsession with Sarah Palin. At least when Obama shows up on a card, he's President. Palin's on some news station and gets mad at Family Guy. She seems more like a political version of Paris Hilton.

That Was Fast: 2010 Topps Series Two Variations Revealed

Despite the fact that Topps hasn't appeared to have confirmed the short print list for 2010 Topps Series One Baseball, there's already early word on the variations for Series Two:

350    Pee Wee Reese (replaces Price/Fielder/Braun Classic Combo)

Not only is there a checklist, but they've also announced a finite print run: 3,000 copies of each variation.

Just getting this info early on instead of being surprised makes me personally feel much better, however there's no word on whether there'll be more pies to the face. Or if we're really unlucky we'll get some rookie variations with them dressed in their hazing garb).

2009 Topps 206 Two-Fer Pack Break

It's time to make some Christmas dinner so let's make this simple. I went to a store that sells cards, some call them card stores, and I bought some cards that came in a sealed pack. To the best of my knowledge, they hadn't been felt up ahead of time like the girl who sat behind you in Grade 10 math class. Here's the results:

Pack One

Not horrible, not spectacular. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I love a Barry Zito card (it's a Piedmont back, by the way). The horizontal look of the mini is impressive. Not a fan of the Bronze parallel.

Pack 2

Did Miller, Hermida and Ramirez make up half of the Marlins' payroll this year? I'm really digging the pose on the Miller card. And the Ramirez - well, the background reminds me of the perfect Hawaiian shirt ever made so it's cool by default as well. The Ramirez is a no-number variation to boot.

Overall impressions of a sample size too small to create a truly vaild impression:
Had it not been for the three-series 2002 Topps 206 Baseball set, I'd be in love with these. But it's retro that's already been done. And done somewhat recently. That said, the dramatic poses are awesome but most are pretty boring.

If anyone needs anything, let me know.

2009 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball Variations Confirmed

Today Topps confirmed a total of six variations were included in the recently released 2009 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball. Although insertion rates were not released, the statement did reveal that they were "extremely rare." What the statement did not reveal was that they're also "extremely unnecessary."

But for those completists out there, here be the variants:

15. Dustin Pedroia, Yankees logo

83. Derek Jeter, Red Sox logo

250. Albret Pujols, All-Rookie Design

545. Neftali Feliz, Black and White Image

563. Pedro Martinez, Black and White Head Shot

569. Alex Rios, Black and White Head Shot

Occasionally, I like variants. In some retro sets, one can use the excuse of an homage that winks at an old error or variation. Even the stupid squirrel in 2007 Topps Baseball was kind of funny (at least to the Yankees fans who know of the squirrel). But seriously, who wants a Derek Jeter card with a Red Sox logo? Jeter fans don't like the Red Sox and Red Sox fans see Jeter as a sworn enemy. It's the same idea with Pedroia. The black and white images - whatever. And why do we need a random rookie trophy of a rookie from 2001?

I have to say, the Creature relics are strange but in a good way. I'd love to get me a unicorn horn or some of Bigfoot's fur. The Invisible Man autograph is genius. I scanned eBay but couldn't find one though. The Bigfoot relic has sold for over $200, which puts it waaaay out of my range for something that's "cute". Maybe someone needs to make a full-blown set of these. It's not like there's any shortage of bigfoot fur.

Upper Deck Channels the Heritage Spirit with Series Two Baseball SPs

This afternoon Upper Deck announced a quartet of shortprinted inserts for 2009 Upper Deck Series Two Baseball. The cards use the company's debut design from 1989 and, as Upper Deck puts it, ask "What If?"

There's Griffey in an action pose instead of a portrait and Randy Johnson as a Mariner instead of in his Expos garb. Surprise, surprise, the remaining two slots are reserved for a couple of Presidents: Reagan and George H.W. Bush, which pay tribute to the fact that politicians are over-used in today's sets.

The cards are numbered 801 through 804 so that, in theory, you could bookend your original 1989 Upper Deck Baseball set with them.

While this concept is mildly interesting, Upper Deck's recycled the 1989 design before as early as their Fifth Anniversary inserts. The Reagan card makes me think of Nixon getting on his chopper more than anything else. The Bush - something tells me there'd be little interest in any card featuring the elder matriarch other than maybe one where he's buddy-buddy with Saturday Night Live alumni Dana Carvey.
