And the Award for the Worst Cut Signature Ever Goes to...

...2007 TriStar Signa Cuts Paul Krause.

Since the advent of cut signature cards, there have been plenty of autographs that have been butchered. From dead presidents to Hollywood legends, the list of cropped cuts is long. But nothing like this abomination.

Not only is the autograph indecipherable, but to add further insult is the fact that there's a huge chunk of white space being wasted. Is it really too much to expect these cuts to be moved to fit the window?

Not surprisingly, the auction for this card ran its course without getting anyone to bite on the $5.99 opening bid.

Upper Deck Bids Adios to NFL Football

First thing I learned today: Kids and tacos mean big messes.

Second thing I learned: Upper Deck and NFL Properties didn't reach a license renewal agreement. In a brief post-dinner statement, Upper Deck announced that it wouldn't be making any NFL products as a result. It's been a tough year for the company, losing baseball, basketball and now football. Not to mention Yu-Gi-Oh and World of Warcraft in the gaming realm. What's left? Sidney Crosby, Iron Man and Hello Kitty.

Here's the Richard McWilliam quote of the day, “Over the past year, Upper Deck has attempted to negotiate a new licensing deal with NFL Properties. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were not able to reach agreeable terms, and therefore will not be issuing any NFL Properties-licensed trading cards for the 2010 season. Upper Deck will continue to focus on its exclusive license agreement with the Collegiate Licensing Company and co-exclusive agreements with NHL Enterprises and the NHL Players’ Association, as well as its multiple entertainment licenses.”

It's a lot of blah, blah, blah but I included it simply because I love the doublespeak of a co-exclusive agreement.

Expect more to come on this and its ramifications. As well as a blow-by-blow account over at SportsCardsUncensored.com.

The Greatest Autograph Signer Ever

Forget Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Wayne Gretzky and Tiger Woods. Billy Drago is the hobby's greatest autograph signer.

For most, the name Billy Drago probably doesn't mean a heck of a lot. For me, he's the creepy bad guy not named Capone in The Untouchables, one of my all-time favorite movies featuring machine guns. But other than that, he's a character actor with roles in such ill-regarded sequels like Tremors 4; Delta Force 2; Martial Law 2; Lady Dragon 2; Cyborg 2; Mirror, Mirror III; and Convict 762. I didn't even know there was a Martial Law, Lady Dragon or Mirror, Mirror to begin with. And yes, I know that Convict 762 doesn't preceed Convict 761, although if it did I'd hope that it starred Chuck Norris and Carl Weathers in a fight to the death.

So for a guy who has largely made a career out of B-sequels, why would I hold him in such high regard. Behold, mere samples of some of his cards from various Inkworks Charmed sets:

Even sticker autographs don't stop the guy:

These aren't 1-of-1 or super-rare variants either. Every card Drago has signed is this way. The shorest inscription I've seen is, "Yours in death, Billy Drago."

The time and dedication Drago has put into his cards has pushed many of his cards into the realm of about $50. Prices vary, especially with the flood of cards that have hit in the last year following the Inkworks bankruptcy.

Many of the inscriptions follow a common theme of fear. Most are hilarious. Besides the poetry and witty quips, I've also seen some doodles and other creative uses of the card. Seeing the short stories Drago has put onto cardboard further puts into perspective the scribbles many athetes and stars try to pass off.

Upper Deck Offers Appeasement for Upper Deck Icons Redemptions

Upper Deck has announced via Facebook that they're tossing collectors a bone for the wait on their 2009 2008 Upper Deck Icons Football redemptions. It seems that they've got some Letterman cards ready to ship out and have added a little something extra: one of six exclusive Brett Favre cards. Yup, six of them. And from the two they've shown, they look pretty swanky.

I'm glad they're doing this. Redemptions still suck but what better way to make them a little less sucky than with some swanky free cards.

If, for some reason you're not connected with Upper Deck on Facebook, they've been offering lots of good info.

(Edit to note that these are 2008 redemptions. What the heck, Upper Deck? Favre can play for the Jets, retire, make a Sears commercial, unretire, sign with the Vikings and  lead the team to an amazing start before you can get some unautographed Letterman cards produced. That's a production issue for the ages.)

I Love Film Cards

I was taking a gander at Upper Deck`s Facebook page last night and came across this thing of beauty from 2009 UD Black Football. Seeing as how I don`t buy any football, there`s no chance I`ll ever hold this card in my hands but here`s hoping they take the concept and carry it over to baseball.

The black and white photo, the modern design, the silver signature, the film slide - my golly this is purdy.

This isn`t the first time slide elements have been used. In 1997 Upper Deck had a sweet insert set in SP entitled Game Film. Later in the year it was used in hockey for their McDonald`s set. Other sets using the concept include 2001-02 Upper Deck Hardcourt Basketball and 2008 SP Legendary Cuts Baseball.

(1997 SP Game Film image from Old-School Breaks)

Depending on how you look at it, Upper Deck might not be the first company to use the idea. In 1994 Donruss introduced the Slide Show inserts in Leaf Baseball. Although they didn`t use actual film slides, the see-through technology sure does look like it. Slide Show returned the following year but the concept was changed to reflect old Viewmasters rather than slides.

Film cards have been used in the non-sport realm for quite some time. From what I can gather NECA introduced them to that end of the hobby in 2001 with their Nightmare Before Christmas Film Cels. At least on a wide-spread scale. I know I have a Batman Forever film cel looking card that was a promotional item during the film`s release back in 1995. But the concept really took off in Upper Deck`s Disney Treasures releases, which were put out during 2003 and 2005. They`ve continued since in different forms ranging from Harry Potter to Spider-Man to the original Frankenstein. What I like about many of the film cards are that they`re all different. They show images direct from the print. I`ve personally been more agressive in my bidding for a few of the Disney Treasures Reel Piece of History cards that have key moments. For example I`d rather have a Fantasia card with Mickey Mouse dressed as the Sorceror`s Apprentice than I would from one of the darker numbers. The sadistic side of me picked up a Bambi card where Bambi`s mother is meeting her fate. Grim, I know, but it`s one of the major moments in cinema history.
Hi. My name is Ryan and I`m a sucker for film cards in all their various forms.

Since When Were Football Cards Used to Sell Liquor?

I was just browsing eBay and saw the following:

The card is from 2008 Upper Deck Icons Football and features none other than Lando Calrissian, Billy Dee Williams. Check out the inscription on the card, "Drink Colt 45 Malt Liquor!" Wow! I know inscriptions are being used to jazz things up a bit, but promoting heavy beverages?

I'm actually wondering if this was signed through the mail or at a show after the fact. I guess I could email the seller and check. Either way, is such an inscription a sign that maybe Lando has been living in Cloud City a little too long?

Oddball Alert: Packers Helmet Card Collection Released

I just came across an article in the Manitowoc Herald Times that gives the details on a new set of Green Bay Packers cards produced by Upper Deck and available through newspaper vendors. Through December 9, there's a coupon in each paper that, when presented alongside $3.29, can be redeemed for that day's card. Sunday papers will include bonus coupons in case a day is missed. The set contains 24 cards. The article also mentions a free holder to keep the cards in.

I'm really digging the design with the big honking plastic helmet. The football collectors out there might want to help me out, but I'm pretty sure there were similarly designed cards in the sport's Sweet Spot equivilent.

It's sets like these that the hobby needs. It's relatively inexpensive if you go day-by-day, it showcases how cards have changed and it should be readily available for all who want to go after it (at least those living in and around Wisconsin).

Ummm, didn't Topps do this already?

Today Upper Deck revealed the look of the Presidential Letterman exchange cards that were inserted in 2008 Upper Deck Icons Football. You can build both "Obama" and "President." I think I'll go and play Scrabble instead. Redmeptions are scheduled to begin shipping in January.

Tony Romo Has Hand Cramps Courtesy of Deal With UD

Look for oodles of Tony Romo autographs featuring the Upper Deck Authenticated hologram and logo soon. Upper Deck announced an exclusive autograph contract with the Dallas quarterback. Wording of the press release was fuzzy and filled with hype nonsense, so I'm not sure if it carries over to a card-exclusive as well.

There was no word on whether or not Jessica Simpson was part of the deal, although I wouldn't be surprised to see her included in 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball Spectrum of Stars: Bubble Gum Pop Autographs much like the hair rockers that were the focus this year.

Trading Card Oops of the Week: 2008 Finest Football

Yesterday Topps announced another "oops" pertaining to 2008 Finest Football. It seems those serial-numbered base autographed rookies are missing their serial numbers. Oops, indeed. To help fix the problem (and create an added layer of chaos), Topps has set things up for collectors to send in their print errors and have them get serial numbered as well as tagged with an authenticity sticker.

Numbering will be based on the order cards are received, so time it wisely faux one-of-one seekers out there. As a peace offering Topps is tossing in a "2008 hobby pack." Of what brand? That is the mystery of careful language.

Cards will be accepted until March 31, 2009.

Send your non-serial numbered base rookie autographs to:
The Topps Company
ATTN: Consumer Relations
401 York Ave
Duryea, PA 18642

Contest Time!

ENTRIES DUE THURSDAY, AUGUST 14 at 11:59 PM.

Last night I posted my second-to-last post about the Brett Favre saga. Tonight's the last post. I hope. And seeing as how we've all suffered enough Brett stuff - all of which seems to be moaning and not cheering (myself included), let's make a happy out of a sad. IT'S CONTEST TIME! Or want some chance at some free stuff?

How do I win?
Be the person who makes the most words out of "BROADWAY BRETT."

The rules of the game.
1. Using the letters B-R-O-A-D-W-A-Y-B-R-E-T-T, spell as many words as you can that have three (3) or more letters (so "OR" would not count as it has only two letters).
2. Email your list of words to ryan@tradercracks.com.
3. Only words found in a standard dictionary are deemed valid (www.dictionary.com will be the source).
4. Even though I'm a Canadian, the more standard American spellings are the ones we'll use.
5. Entries will be accepted until 11:59 PM on Thursday, August 14.
6. The person with the most number of valid words is the winner. A word is only valid if it uses the letters given and it's in the dictionary.
7. By entering, you agree to let me put your first name and last initial on the blog and on my website www.TraderCracks.com.

So what are they playing for, Janice?
Seeing as how I now loath Brett Favre, a 1991 Upper Deck Favre rookie will be the bootie. In the event that you're not a football fan, I may be willing to "trade" the prize for something else. I'll also use the Upper Deck letters to spell out your words so that you can show all your friends and co-workers the wonderful possibility of these "Letter" cards.

My First and Second-to-Last Post on Brett Favre

By now you know that football legend Brett Favre has been a busy guy these past few months. After getting knocked out of the playoffs he went home and decided to hang 'em up - as in retire. Somewhere in the next couple of months he found his smile again and decided he still wanted to play. His former team, the Packers moved on. But Brett stomped his feet a couple of times. His no comment comments to the media were filled with meaning, which fueled more news stories. And wouldn't you know we had a soap opera on our hands that couldn't have been scripted better by Vincent Kennedy McMahon and the folks at WWE.

Long story short, Favre kicks dirt long enough to get a trade that sent him (and his now tarnished legacy) to New York where he's instantly become the biggest name quarterback for the Jets since "Broadway" Joe Namath.

My feelings about the whole saga can be summed up in one word:

But when you have a soap opera story and a big-name player going to a new team you just know that the card companies are going to be racing to get the first to get Brett the Jet. If I were updating my Facebook status, it'd read

Upper Deck and Donruss both seem to have it figured out with the first cards of Favre holding a Jets jersey already in production. But Upper Deck got a one-up on the cute factor (read: don't care). They've created a "By the Letter" manufactured letter patch insert set where collectors can spell:

In case you're wondering, the patch letters will be out later this month with 2008 Upper Deck Icons football. His first in-uniform Upper Deck card won't be available for a couple of months.

And for all you puzzle fans out there's combinations galore. In honor of Brett, the Jets, Madden '09 and the Topps Favre card with him cutting the lawn, there's going to be a contest posted tomorrow. So get your thinking caps ready.

Super Stub in Super Bowl Set

Topps has announced that their upcoming Super Bowl box set will include a ticket stub (not a ticket stub relic card that was originally announced) from this year's big game.

The 28-card set will include 22 player cards and five highlight cards (and apparently one mysterious extra likely to be a header card or checklist). If you're a Patriots fan still in mourning you may want to avoid it because it's all about Eli and company.

You should be able to find sets for around $20. They will be released on the first week of March.

Upper Deck Benches Michael Vick

Upper Deck announced today via press release that they've decided to pull Michael Vick from their 2007 releases. Oddly enough, they included an image of "a card that never will be" along with the same press release. While I commend their courage to take a stand, despite the fact that Vick has been convicted of nothing as of yet, I do find it a little odd that they send out the image knowing that it's going to drum up interest in the soon-to-be-released set that I will not mention. But here's the image in question anyhow.

UPDATE: Beckett.com has has a story that Donruss is removing Vick from its products as well. No word from Topps yet.
